History

The General History of Gahanna & the Olde Gahanna Sanctuary

In the early 1900s Gahanna was a lively mill town. Remnants of the millrace, which gave Mill Street its name, are still seen in Big Walnut Creek, which runs through town. Many original buildings remain in the Mill/Granville area and can be recognized by their Victorian architecture. Several local buildings are on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and Sites.

Gahanna is one of the fastest growing, and largest suburbs of the Metropolitan Columbus area. The city population has grown from 596 residents in 1950 to more than 34,000 in 1997. With well-managed growth and expansion, excellent city schools, and a convenient location, Gahanna has a bright future.

The Gahanna Sanctuary was previously the Peace Lutheran Church built in 1895. The congregation having moved to its new location on Clark State Road, sold the building for use as a preschool. The Sanctuary Inc. acquired the facility in 1980 for community activities.
